At the 2023 Above & Beyond concert, I was dancing at the main stage with Mary. A woman asked me my favorite bird. I could not think of a bird easily. I may have considered Cygnus but I said Bird of Paradise. She gave an interesting fact about a bird, I think an Ostrich, but I do not remember at the moment [July 27, 2023].

The name Apus is derived from the Greek apous, meaning “without feet”. This referred to the Western misconception that the bird-of-paradise had no feet, which arose because the only specimens available in the West had their feet and wings removed. Such specimens began to arrive in Europe in 1522, when the survivors of Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition brought them home.

Bird-of-paradise (Wikipedia) The birds-of-paradise are members of the family Paradisaeidae of the order Passeriformes. The majority of species are found in eastern Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and eastern Australia. The family has 44 species in 17 genera. The members of this family are perhaps best known for the plumage of the males of the species (the majority) which are sexually dimorphic, in particular the very long elaborate feathers extending from the beak, wings, tail or head. For the most part they are confined to dense rainforest habitat. The diet of all species is dominated by fruit and to a lesser extent arthropods. The birds-of-paradise have a variety of breeding systems, ranging from monogamy to lek-type polygamy.
