The story of Columbia Hills Historical State Park is both exciting and painful in its connections to one of the most significant centers of human and natural history in the Pacific Northwest. The park lies just a short distance upstream from the site of the Long Narrows of the Columbia River and about 10 miles downstream from the site of Celilo Falls. Both features were inundated by the reservoir behind The Dalles Dam in 1957. Indigenous people have lived here for millennia, thriving at what was one of the most productive fishing sites in North America, surrounded by rich upland resources and the focal point of an extensive trade network.

Columbia Hills State Park is a 3,338 acre park on the banks of the Columbia River in southern Washington. The park is bordered on the north by DNR’s equally large Columbia Hills Natural Area Preserve, where hikers can climb to the top of the ridge to enjoy scenic views from Stacker Butte. The area gives a sense of the rich geologic and cultural history of the Columbia River Basin and provides gorgeous views of yellow arrowleaf balsamroot-carpeted hillsides during the spring wildflower bloom. Rock climbers and geologists alike can appreciate Horsethief Butte, whereas those looking to fish, swim, and enjoy a day in the sun will find an ideal day use area at Horsethief Lake. Columbia Hills Historical State Park is a Washington public recreation area located 6 miles (9.7 km) east of Dallesport on SR 14 in Klickitat County. The state park occupies 3,338 acres (1,351 ha) on Horsethief Lake, an impoundment of the Columbia River. It was created in 2003 with the merger of Horsethief Lake State Park and Dalles Mountain Ranch.
