Island County’s first Commissioners’ meeting takes place in Coveland on April 4, 1853. (historylink.org) On April 4, 1853, the first Island County Commissioners’ meeting takes place in Coveland, the newly designated county seat, located on Penn’s Cove northwest of Coupeville on Whidbey Island’s east coast. The meeting is held at the home of Commissioner John Alexander. The other two commissioners attending are John Crocket and Samuel D. Howe.

This community was listed on an 1867 nautical chart and has a small Wikipedia article, but it is not listed on OpenStreetMap. Yelp has a 10 best things to do in Coveland, but all of the things are hours away in Seattle (clearly Yelp auto-generates useless slop to get search engine hits).

Teal Slough Natural Resources Conservation Area (dnr.wa.gov) This small site, located near the mouth of the Naselle River, supports a remnant coastal old growth forest represented by ancient western red-cedar and Sitka spruce trees. This forest provides homes for marbled murrelets and spotted owls, as well as for Dunn’s and Van Dyke’s salamanders, Vaux’s swifts, and pileated woodpeckers. Easily accessible from Highway 101, and adjacent to a larger conservation landscape, the site has a high potential for educational purposes to illustrate a coastal forest ecosystem.
