A small southern constellation, introduced by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille to commemorate the reticle in the eyepiece of his small telescope with which he catalogued the southern stars from the Cape of Good Hope in 1751–52.

DENEBOLA (Beta Leonis). Great Leo, who seems to rule northern spring skies, contains three stars of major note: bright Regulus, second magnitude Algieba (which shares the “Sickle” with Regulus), and mid-second magnitude (2.14) Denebola, the 62nd brightest star in the sky.
