Stephenson 2 DFK 1 is usually classified as a red supergiant, like the other stars in the cluster. However certain enigmatic properties, such as the star’s significant infrared excess, have led the authors of Davies (2007) to state that it might be an extreme red hypergiant, much like VY Canis Majoris.
