The written history of Maplewood begins about 165 years ago when European and French-Canadian settlers began farming in this area. Prior to this time, the land was inhabited by the Dakota Indians with occasional visits by French and English fur traders and explorers. The landscape was a mix of scrub oak and prairie with many wetlands and lakes.

Maplewood has its own “Ghost Town.” English Street and Frost Avenue was the center of this now vanished city. In the final years of the nineteenth century it was a very different place.

Lauderdale is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and is surrounded by Minneapolis, St. Paul, Roseville, and Falcon Heights. Along with Roseville, it is one of two cities to touch both Minneapolis and St Paul.
