- Blue Moon Tavern (Seattle): A Reminiscence by James Knisely (historylink.org)
James Knisely contributed this reminiscence of Seattle’s renowned Blue Moon Tavern, located in the University District on NE 45th Street. The Blue Moon has been the favored watering hole of poets, bohemians, politicos, artists, and writers, including Knisely, who was born and raised in Seattle. He studied writing at the University of Washington with Theodore Roethke and David Wagoner, and more recently with Jack Cady and at Richard Hugo House in Seattle. His novel Chance: An Existential Horse Opera was a finalist for the 2003 Washington State Book Awards. He wanders from time to time through the Moon.
- McRoberts, Patrick (1952-2010) (historylink.org)
Patrick McRoberts was a writer, editor, public affairs consultant and political strategist, a biographer, historian, musician, cultural vivant and gadfly, spiritual advisor in the way of the Tao, and an unseen giant in the affairs of Seattle who, perhaps as much as anyone, gave the city its skyline and much of its spirit for the beginning of the twenty-first century. A child of the Vietnam era, a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and a contributor to causes that mattered, he used his remarkable gifts for communication and community to shape the issues, campaigns, and leaders that shaped the city and the state.
- The Day I Saved Seattle: A Personal Memoir of Vietnam Protest by James Knisely (historylink.org)
In May 1970, Seattle (along with much of the nation) was in the midst of weeks of protests that erupted when U.S. forces entered Cambodia on May 1. Protests escalated after National Guardsmen fired on a demonstration at Kent State University in Ohio, killing four students, on May 4. On the 5th and again on the 6th thousands of protestors blocked Interstate 5 through Seattle. James Knisely was present when demonstrators and police in riot gear faced off on the freeway for the second time, as he recalls in this memoir.
