Delta Cephei (stars.astro.illinois.edu) DELTA CEP (Delta Cephei). Surely among the most famed of all stars, fourth magnitude (4.1 or thereabouts) Delta Cephei, set at the southeastern corner of dim Cepheus (the King), does not even have a proper name. It is, however, the only star that has given its constellation name over to represent a whole class of stars, the “Cepheids.”

Ancient and Medieval philosophers might have said that metaphysics was, like chemistry or astrology, to be defined by its subject-matter: metaphysics was the “science” that studied “being as such” or “the first causes of things” or “things that do not change”.

There are metaphysical problems, which cannot be disposed of by declaring them meaningless. For, as I have repeatedly said, they are “beyond physics” indeed and demand an act of faith. We have to accept this fact to be honest.
