The Early History of Usenet, Part I: Prologue (cs.columbia.edu) November 2019 is, as best I can recall, the 40th anniversary of the conception of Usenet. (What’s Usenet? The Wikipedia article is ok but not perfect.) I should have written a proper paper; instead, there will (probably) be an irregular series of blog posts. I’ll do Part I of N tonight.

Willie D (Wikipedia) William James Dennis (born November 1, 1966) is an American rapper and songwriter best known as a member of the Houston rap group the Geto Boys, alongside Bushwick Bill and Scarface. He maintains and regularly uploads to his YouTube channel, posting social commentary videos. As of July 2021, his channel WillieDLive has accumulated over 200 million video views.

Digital Equipment Corporation PDP 11/20 used in the FOSDIC system (retrotechnology.com) In August 2007, MARCH acquired a PDP-11 system from Mr. Greenough. This particular computer was one with which he was associated while employed at the old National Bureau of Standards [NBS, now NIST.] After retirement, his consultancy work for the Postal Service Research Laboratory maintained that association, leading eventually to its acquisition by Greenough after the project’s completion. The document below, from Mr. Greenough, describes his work and the equipment related to that product, the FOSDIC IV.
PDP-11/20 System and Exhibit (retrotechnology.com) In August 2007, the MARCH vintage computer club of InfoAge in New Jersey acquired a PDP-11 system of some sort. When I came by to help them set up rooms for new exhibits and storage, I saw the system and saw that it was an 11/20, with a largely COMPLETE collection of manuals, schematics, and even the paper-tape operating system. I saw right away that this could be the basis for an exhibit of 1970’s “state of the art” for DEC minicomputers, even without running the system. I also saw that I could create this exhibit as an exhibit example for InfoAge and MARCH. After some consideration and encouragements from MARCH members, Evan agreed and I began work.

PDP-11 (Wikipedia) The PDP–11 is a series of 16-bit minicomputers originally sold by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) from 1970 into the late 1990s, one of a set of products in the Programmed Data Processor (PDP) series. In total, around 600,000 PDP-11s of all models were sold, making it one of DEC’s most successful product lines. The PDP-11 is considered by some experts to be the most popular minicomputer.
