Placed first in the New Testament canon, Matthew is a gospel written in Koine Greek in the first century AD and traditionally attributed to the apostle Matthew, the tax collector. Composed with a strongly Jewish audience in view, it presents Jesus as the fulfillment of Israel’s scriptures and gathers his teaching into great discourses, above all the Sermon on the Mount.
