PuTTY

history

History of PuTTY’s development (chiark.greenend.org.uk) I received email from a software architect asking me if there was a writeup of the history and gradual development of the PuTTY tool suite. I wrote and sent a long response, and having done that, it seemed a shame to waste it. So here it is as a public article too.

Iconography of the PuTTY tools (chiark.greenend.org.uk) In March 2025 I received an email asking about PuTTY’s “logo” – the icon used by the Windows executable. The sender wanted to know where it had come from, and how it had evolved over time.

The CP/M 86 and CP/M 80 Museum (cpm8680.com) This website is a Work In Progress dedicated to CP/M (Control Program for Microcomputers) which was (and is) an operating system similar to MS-DOS but which predated MS-DOS, and which is in fact the operating system that MS-DOS descended from. But CP/M is much more than simply an early version of MS-DOS and CP/M is very much alive in online communities of Enthusiasts and Others who still use CP/M in Old (and sometimes newer) Computers and Emulators.
