Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Matthew 7:15 KJV
How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.
Matthew 12:12 KJV
- Jonathan Edwards (theologian) (Wikipedia)
Jonathan Edwards (October 5, 1703 â March 22, 1758) was an American revivalist preacher, philosopher, and Congregationalist theologian. Edwards is widely regarded as one of America’s most important and original philosophical theologians. Edwards’ theological work is broad in scope but rooted in the Puritan heritage as exemplified in the Westminster and Savoy Confessions of Faith. Recent studies have emphasized how thoroughly Edwards grounded his life’s work on conceptions of beauty, harmony, and ethical aptness, and how central the Age of Enlightenment was to his mindset. Edwards played a critical role in shaping the First Great Awakening and oversaw some of the first revivals in 1733â35 at his church in Northampton, Massachusetts. His work gave rise to a doctrine known as New England theology.
To create man was a fine and original idea; but to add the sheep was a tautology.
Mark Twain
- Sheep (Wikipedia)
Sheep or domestic sheep (Ovis aries) are domesticated, ruminant mammals typically kept as livestock. Although the term sheep can apply to other species in the genus Ovis, in everyday usage it almost always refers to domesticated sheep. Like all ruminants, sheep are members of the order Artiodactyla, the even-toed ungulates. Numbering a little over one billion, domestic sheep are also the most numerous species of sheep. An adult female is referred to as a ewe (/juË/), an intact male as a ram, occasionally a tup, a castrated male as a wether, and a young sheep as a lamb.
