Chelan County embraces the drainages of the Wenatchee River, the Entiat River, and Lake Chelan, and the Chelan River for a total of 2,920 square miles. Irrigation has transformed the arid valleys into agricultural treasure houses and the home to Washington apples and the ubiquitous Aplet and Cotlet confections. Hydroelectric development has lived up to the Wenatchee Daily World’s claim, first made in the 1920s, that the region is the “Power Belt of the Great Northwest.” Almost 90 percent of the county is owned by the state and federal governments.

The Arcola High Bridge is the most spectacular river crossing in the Twin Cities metro area. It crosses the nearly mile wide Saint Croix River Valley between the village of Arcola, Minnesota, and Somerset, Wisconsin. It consists of five huge steel arches that tower nearly 200 feet over the bottom of the valley.

The Soo Line High Bridge, also known as the Arcola High Bridge, is a steel deck arch bridge over the St. Croix River between Stillwater, Minnesota and Somerset, Wisconsin, United States. It was designed by structural engineer C.A.P. Turner and built by the American Bridge Company from 1910 to 1911. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 for its national significance in the themes of engineering and transportation. It was nominated for its exceptional dimensions, beauty, innovative engineering techniques, and importance to transportation between Minnesota and Wisconsin.
