Vashon-Maury Island is located in the middle of southern Puget Sound, midway between Seattle and Tacoma, within the boundaries of King County. Its history parallels that of the rest of the county, but its growth and development have occurred at a much slower rate, owing in main part to its inaccessibility to the mainland.

The south end of Vashon Island is quieter than the business district, making it a lovely place to take a calming walk with your family. Burton Acres park offers a short but fulfilling hike. The 64-acre park features more than 1.2 miles of trails to explore on a loop route.

It covers an island alternately called Vashon Island or Vashon–Maury Island, the largest island in Puget Sound south of Admiralty Inlet. The population was 10,624 at the 2010 census and the size is 36.9 square miles (95.6 km2).
