- The Wynoochee Mitigation Unit, located along the Wynoochee River, is popular during hunting season and used throughout the year for hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing. Since 1992, WDFW has managed this land owned by Tacoma Power as elk winter forage habitat as mitigation for the loss of habitat from the Wynoochee dam and reservoir.

The city of Kirkland, located on the northeastern shore of Lake Washington east of Seattle, is named for Peter Kirk (1840-1916). Kirk was a British steel industrialist who originally envisioned Kirkland as a bustling steel town. Kirk’s plans didn’t materialize. Nevertheless, Kirkland has become by the twenty-first century a thriving suburban community of almost 50,000 people.

The Olympic Wildlife Area is primarily found in Grays Harbor County, with the Anderson Homestead unit located in Clallam County. The wildlife area has approximately 1,480 acres of land, and its estuary and wetland habitats support a diversity of wildlife including big and small game species, songbirds, as well as native and federally endangered fish populations. This wildlife area includes a wide range of important fish and wildlife habitats including riparian, estuarine, freshwater wetland, old-growth/mature forest, upland meadow, and coastal prairie systems.
